Are You “Sick” or Detoxing?
Dr. Jeff, November 29th, 2009 So you’re out at a party this holiday season with your buddy and things get a bit out of hand. You drink too much and then some more. Not a responsible or smart thing to do, but it happens….
As the night progresses you start getting queasy. What a horrible feeling! Eventually you become intimately acquainted with the porcelain throne (you know what I mean.) It’s an all too embarrassing situation, but you’ll live to see another day. Your friend, however, is not so fortunate.
He never feels nauseous and goes right on drinking, and makes fun of you for not being able to “hold your liquor”. Until….he winds up collapsing in the midst of the other party-goers, sweating profusely, breath faint, heartbeat irregular. He’s not just drunk; he’s in serious trouble. By the time the ambulance arrives, it’s too late. He’s a murky grey color and there’s no pulse. He’s gone, a victim of alcohol poisoning.
Now, I’m pretty sure that all of you would call that feeling of nausea after drinking too much alcohol “getting sick”. But ask yourself this question, “Who in this scenario is the sick one, you who vomited out the toxins, or your buddy who kept so many inside that it killed him?!”
Of course we should be careful about drinking alcohol, but what’s the bigger lesson here? It’s this: Don’t mistake the physical feelings caused by your body’s natural detoxification response as “being sick”. Detox is the process of getting poisons out of your body; really being sick is when your body is NOT able to detox.
Now, think back to all those times you said you were “sick” – maybe from alcohol, or junk food, or even when you have a cold and run a fever – and what you’ll discover is that you were just detoxing all along. You’re body was responding in a healthy manner to rid itself of something it didn’t want inside.
And by the way, the next time you plan on taking some over-the-counter meds to sooth your detox symptoms (pharma compounds — like aspirin or antacids – which prevent detox), remember your “buddy” who died because his body wouldn’t detox!
