AskWellWithU: How Much Sugar?
Dr. Jeff, July 26th, 2010 I am having 3-4 cups of tea or sometimes coffee a day with 2 spoons of sugar each. I use raw or brown sugar
would you consider that to much per day?
I also have honey on natural yogurt in the morning.
I do not eat any processed food, so any other sugars would come from fresh fruit.
Could you please comment on how much sugar is acceptable?

Good question!
First I will tell you that all the forms of “sugar” you mention are concentrated forms and need to be monitored carefully. I am not sure what you mean by “raw” sugar. If you mean organic sugar with all the nutrients left in, then OK.
Brown sugar is junk. If you are speaking about ordinary brown sugar, then it is as bad or worse than “white” table sugar (it’s just white sugar with molasses).
Honey is OK in small amounts, as it is a concentrated form of fructose, which is good when natural and not over used (too much of even a good thing is not good).
Now the four cups of tea or coffee is not a great habit either. If you are using naturally decaffeinated tea it may be OK, but coffee is not good long term. Try using Stevia instead of any of the above sweeteners. It is natural and contains none of the problems that concentrated sugars or artificial sweeteners have.
Hope this helps.
That it may go well with you,
Dr. Jeff
